Local volunteer featured for community volunteer service
DES MOINES, IA –
Mike Hagerty is an active volunteer in his community who is passionate about helping remove barriers to education for kids in his community. Mike originally became a volunteer in 2008 upon learning that 48% of students in Muscatine were receiving free and reduced lunch and the high school graduation rate was only 75%. Inspired to act, he became involved with the development of the Kids First fund to help students with need eliminate barriers to quality educational opportunities.

He volunteers 8-10 hours per week with Kids First as well as the Bees, Butterflies, and Blossoms program. He serves on several boards including the board for MCSA, a local shelter, and the church board at St Mary’s.

Mike Hagerty was nominated by Nichole Sorgenfrey of United Way. Mike is being featured this week at www.volunteeriowa.org as part of Governor Branstad’s “A Call to Service” initiative, designed to challenge and encourage Iowans to give back to their communities through volunteerism and service.

About the ICVS (or Volunteer Iowa)
The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and its partner agencies work with organizations and individuals on three main fronts. The first is to help agencies develop quality programs that use service as a strategy to fulfill their missions and address Iowa’s greatest areas of need. The second is to help engage Iowans in their communities by promoting service and expanding the volunteer base. Finally, the third area of work is to connect individuals with appropriate service opportunities by building the volunteer infrastructure. More information is available at www.volunteeriowa.org.
